Ashtanga Yoga and Vinyasa Flow Holiday in Sunny Morocco
with Paul Fox and Susie Hartnoll
Saturday 21st April to Saturday 28th April 2012 &
27th October to Saturday 3rd November 2012 (half term week)

Join Paul Fox and Susie Hartnoll at the outstanding and luxurious Villa Mandala yoga retreat on Banana Beach on Morocco's west coast. This week will be a chance to recharge your batteries and escape the UK Autumn for some much needed sun. There will be two yoga classes a day in a very special yoga space overlooking the beach and its rolling waves; a morning practice before breakfast from 8 - 9.30am and an evening restorative/techniques class from 5 - 6.15pm.  Both classes will be suitable for all levels of ability. The rest of the day and evenings are free to relax and enjoy Villa Mandala (which has its own pool), the beach and a wide and exciting range of other activities. These include traditional Moroccan Hammam which involves steam room, exfoliating body scrub and massage, surfing lessons provided by Surf Maroc, horse riding and/or trekking, swimming amid freshwater pools and waterfalls in "Paradise Valley", a day trip to Essaouira, and Souks (Moroccan markets) locally and in Agadir.  The facilities at Villa Mandala are exceptional and homely and you will get a sense of the real Morocco with its location on the edge of a coastal village. The staff will look after your every need, including picking you up and dropping you back at the airport at no extra charge, and the kitchen produces exceptional gourmet vegetarian food. A full and varied breakfast is served at 9.30am (including some cooked food), a packed lunch is provided and the evening meal at 7.30pm is preceded by "dips" at 7pm. Thursday evening is chef's night off and guests are invited to eat out locally or attend a Surf Maroc BBQ overlooking the beach. The cost of this one meal is not included in the £499 basic price. Wifi is available and there is a communal laptop to check email or surf the web. Towels and beach towels provided.

Ashtanga Yoga is graceful fusion of breath and movement that integrates body, mind and spirit. Paul Fox is a yoga teacher and teacher trainer based in Somerset who specialises in establishing the foundations for Ashtanga Yoga, and making the practice accessible to anyone. Ashtanga Yoga has a reputation for being difficult, physical and “hardcore”, but this is based on a misunderstanding. All postures can and should be modified to suit the individual needs of the student’s body. What matters is the co-ordination of breath with movement to create vinyasa. This brings about health in the body, stillness in the mind and a profound feeling of well-being. On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings there will be a vinyasa flow class with Susie Hartnoll, a gifted yoga teacher based in Bristol. This will not only challenge you physically, but will also provide an opportunity to take the body into new areas of movement to complement the ashtanga practice.

So the week will be a mixture of experiencing Vinyasa Flow yoga and learning the foundations of the ashtanga practice (or developing your foundations further if you already have experience of ashtanga yoga). We will work with ujjayi breath, bandha (core awareness and stability) and drishti (looking place). The afternoon sessions will be mostly restorative as well as some tecnhiques and will explore some themes from the classic yoga books. We have some yoga DVDs that we will share with you on some evenings.

We believe passionately that the purpose of a yoga practice is to support and nourish individuals to help face the everyday challenges of life, and is not some esoteric practice. On this holiday you will be nourished with yoga and helped to develop a self-practice that may support you when you get home and tumble back into the hurly burly of everyday living.

VILLA MANDALA POOL                                                                     EATING OUTSIDE

Banana Beach is 10km from the Moroccan city of Agadir, which has many interesting features including a huge Moroccan marketplace, or Souk. A little way up the coast by bus or taxi are world class surf spots at the charming and atmospheric fishing village of Taghazoute (beginners and intermediate surfing is also available on sandy beaches close to Banana Beach). This holiday will be limited to a maximum of 16 students, so book early to avoid disappointment. Please note that the beach immediately outside Villa Mandala is rocky. However, there are lovely Sandy beaches if you walk either way down the coast, around 15 minutes away.

The cost of this holiday includes full board, gourmet vegetarian food (apart from one evening left free to eat out), all yoga classes and airport transfers to and from Agadir. Price: £499 per person based on sharing a room (doubles and twins). You can book a shared place without finding someone to share with. We will do that for you. Because there are a limited number of rooms in Villa Mandala and no singles, a single supplement of £250 applies. However, you do not have to pay the single supplement if you book on your own. It is up to us to find you a room-mate and if we don't you will not be charged for your single room.
There are two en-suite bedrooms which are available for a £50 surcharge (£549 per person). Flights not included – budget airlines fly to Agadir. For example, Ryanair offer a service from Stansted on Saturdays. Easyjet fly from Gatwick. There are other flight options also. You may wish to add some days to your holiday and catch the 3 hour bus up to Marrakech where there are even more flight options, including to the South West.

Testimonials

What a truly special experience the yoga week in Morocco was. I felt extremely privileged to have been part of it and know it will stay with me for a very long time. Villa Mandala held the space perfectly for us to experience a thoroughly nurturing week of yoga and relaxation. The Villa’s accommodation was extremely comfortable and the food some of the best veggie food I have ever tasted - if I could have flown Shane the chef home with me I would have! The pace of the week was perfect and I felt thoroughly supported and guided in building up an Ashtanga practice that suited my personal needs through your excellent and intuitive teaching.

What a wonderful week that was. wonderful Yoga, wonderful villa, wonderful food and the most wonderful people, all in all a perfect holiday. The balance was perfect, enough Yoga to challenge and enough down time to relax, couldn't have been better! As the baby Yogi of the pack, I found it challenging but not to much that I couldn't achieve it and felt comfortable in my ability.

The retreat was perfect and exceeded all expectations but I want to say that along with the great Yoga and food the friends I met that week each brought a special gift and contributed so freely to the experience.  Last week has changed my life and I hope that we could all have a reunion one day as the energy created last weeks was truly special and one experience I will never forget.

Thank you so much for organising what turned out to be an incredibly special experience for everyone. A memory to be treasured and friendships that I feel will continue to blossom.

The rooms were beautiful, typically Moroccan and so spacious. I was really expecting our room to be a very tight squeeze with no-where to put our copious amounts of stuff but it was actually huge with two enormous cupboards. We could have actually lived there quite happily.

One of the best holidays that we’ve have in years! On a personal level, I did more yoga during that week than I’d done in the past 6 or 7 years – and I enjoyed every single session immensely. Being a person that can be put off by people sticking to a doctrine a little too dogmatically, I really liked your “real-world” approach to the conveyance of yoga principles.  The amount of yoga (time) that you led during the holiday was perfect for me – not too much, not too little – and I never felt intimidated by my relative lack of knowledge of the yoga postures. The location provided a really good selection of reasonably priced day time activities for us all to do which, on reflection, added significantly to the richness of the holiday experience.

My primary aim in coming was to get a break, and to see somewhere new, with a group of like-minded people.  And the holiday delivered all that, and some! I loved Villa mandala.  The surf maroc organisation are really great. I loved their positive can-do approach, their youth & enthusiasm and the food!  I really can't fault that! Morocco was lovely too.  I think we were very fortunate in the choice of location, and time of the year - perfect summer weather in February, and no mosquitos! The choice of activities was great, it dovetailed in so well with what we were doing, and of very good quality, and super value for money. The yoga was great, too, I should add!  I do like your approach: offering what you bring.  People commented about your lack of ego, and we all enjoyed your gentle, appropriate adjustments and sense of humour.  I think I learned a lot.

I really loved the retreat. It was just what the doctor ordered. It's always a bit scary going by yourself to something like this, but the group was so amazing that i feel i have made lots of new friends.  I found your teaching superb. I really like the way you seem to teach so effortlessly, and you made everyone feel special and cared for. The pace of the practice and content was just right, and behind the scenes, there was not one ounce of grumbling. Everyone seemed to be going through some sort of transitional phase in their life, and everyone felt stronger and more able to cope with these changes. It helped everyone enormously and people went through the week feeling that they were improving and growing. It was a nourishing experience.

You have given me my mojo back.
