& Anatomy Course

25 hour course
Tutors: Dr Ruth Gilmore PhD & Paul Fox
This 4 day course is for teachers and
serious students of yoga who want to
deepen their knowledge of
anatomy and physiology. We will look at how
asana, pranayama,
meditation and relaxation practices tie into the systems
of the
body. The programme for the week (which is subject to revision and
amendment) is as follows:-
Mornings 9.30-1pm
– 2 lectures by Ruth + 1 hour yoga practice with Paul themed
to the day's study
Afternoons 2-5pm
– 1 lecture by Ruth + 2 workshops led by Paul, including
analysis of a different category of yoga asanas each day (how they
work the body and appropriate modifications) and other yoga
practices related to anatomy and physiology. There will be a themed
relaxation every day after lunch.
Course length: 30 hours - can be used for your Continuing
Professional Development. Attendance certificates will be issued.
Day 1
AM - Musculoskeletal System and connective tissue, including
common
ailments of the joints, bones and muscles.
PM – Forward bends and the modification of asana when working
with a range of
conditions to ensure safe practice.
Day
2
AM – Respiratory system and cardiovascular system.
PM – Back bends. Working with the breath in yoga,
including breath awareness,
basic breathing and
classical pranayamas and their benefits and
dangers.
Day 3
AM – Nervous system and endocrine system
PM – Side bends and balances. Strategies and practices to de-stress students, lead them
towards a meditation practice and effective
relaxation techniques.
Day 4
AM – Immune system, lymphatic
system and cancer
PM – Restorative yoga practice using bolsters, blocks and blankets
About the Tutors
Ruth Gilmore was a full-time lecturer at
the Queen's
University of Belfast for many
years, first in Physiology and then
in
Anatomy. She took early retirement in order to devote more time
to yoga.
Ruth has worked for over a decade with the Yoga
Biomedical Trust (YBT) at
the Yoga Therapy Centre in Islington,
London, and for several years with the
Life Centre, London (LC). She
is responsible for Anatomy and Physiology
tuition on the YBT/LC's
revised fully modular Yoga Therapy Diploma course,
one of the world's leading yoga training programmes.
Paul Fox is a BWY Diploma Course Tutor and teaches Ashtanga
Yoga and
Core Strength Yoga in West Somerset. He holds the VTCT
qualifitication in
anatomy
and physiology.
